2007 Castle Rock Pinot Noir (Sonoma)

In determining value in wine, price is a consideration. However, I typically flinch at bottles of wine with cheap pricing as the cynic in me worries about wineries dumping bad wine through third labels on unsuspecting consumers.

Finding the 2007 Castle Rock Pinot Noir (Sonoma), 2008 listed at the winery; on sale at $11 and carrying the local wine superstore’s recommend tag seemed too good to be true. Fighting the urge to move past, I figured I’d take a risk and buy a bottle.

On opening, the first pour had a strong, astringent nose, but good color, soft mouth feel and nice fruit. This wine has a nice flavor with food and was definitely a Pinot Noir. The strong nose mellowed as the wine opened and use of an aerator improved the nose and flavor. This is a surprisingly good value.

Rating: 1$, 2q, 3v
