2007 Tres Picos Garnacha, Bodegas Borsao

Rarely does an email show up and require acquiring a bottle of wine for dinner, but today was an exception. The local wine megastore email arrived proclaiming the 2007 Tres Picos Garnacha from Bodegas Borsao as the epitome of value at $15.99 with superlatives as follows:

91 points IWC, $15.99 a per bottle.
Consistent Excellence
“Both The Wine Advocate and the International Wine Cellar are taken by the Tres Picos.”
The Wine Advocate Rates at 91 and IWC at 90
“As ridiculous a value as one can find these days.”
“One of the best values in the wind world.”

I consider Spanish red wine to have some of the better values and the Tres Picos is no exception. This wine showcases the Grenache grape, a surprise since this grape is more typically used by wine makers to blend and soften harsher varietals or by itself in softer red wine. The Tres Picos features the grape in a complex and concentrated wine with big flavors of berry, pepper, spice, vanilla, and leather. This wine is more comparable to a quality Rhone or Syrah than what’s expected from a Grenache. Great by itself or with food, this is real value and shows there can be truth in the wine megastore hype.

E-tailers have this available to states who allow shipping for less than local retail. If interested, shopperswines.com and NapaCabs.com both advertise better deals than the $15.99 local.

Rating: 1$, 4q, 4v (Rated 1$ as internet deals are under $15)
